My theme within the reverie: "Daylight Prisms"

Although i've known for some time the essence of my theme and what it represents, it has been hard to capture in a title until now. I've had a small personal victory ( YAY!) where ive come up with a name, " Daylight Prisms" which conveys many facets of the concept of my theme.

The title basically alludes to the colours, shapes and patterns created through the entrance of sunlight indoors. The prism aspect also references a major part of my concept which is symmetry, mirror images and the warmth of companionship.
When trying to interpret our group theme in a personalised way, i wanted to stay true to the mood we've tried so hard to create; one of a dreamlike state. I began exploring layers, in particular the layers or levels of consciousness and wanted to represent that to some extent in my range. Symmetry appealed to me after i was looking back on previous work i had done a few years back and saw research on the rorshach ink blot test. I decided that i wanted to represent the movement aswell as the calm that can be seen in symmetrical shapes and reflections.
When contemplating colours, i also wanted to be able to use the beautiful and bold hues in our scheme in a generous amount, and not just stay with the safe core black and nudes of our palette. The concept of a prism tranforming sunlight into the colours of the rainbow invites the use of the bold colour while still remaining true to the essence of lady liberitine.....

Jo- love the picture!
Elaine, that looks like a really good take on the theme - i'll put up my individual theme tonight dependant on factors such as sleep and general distraction! how is everyone else going?

individual theme: cruel fairy tales

Within the topic of "creature of reverie", I am thinking to work out a collection about the reverie of our likely costumers to show their impression of lives. As our costumers are smart, independent, confident and having a great success in their business, they have got something that others are dreaming for. However, they are still normal people, they also have all the emotion just same as others. At the same time when they got such success in their lives, they may lost something as well. Therefore, I decided to make a collection about the emotion of our costumers that we often forget.

THEME:
In this individual theme, I am inspired from the Grimm's Fairy Tales. This is a very famous story book for children which is a collection of German origin fairy tales and first published in 1812. I think almost every child have ever heard about those story in their bed time. However, I read an article about the real fact of Grimm's Fairy Tales. It is said that actually the original Grimm's Fairy Tales is a book that will shame mothers when they tell those story to their kids. In the original stories, there are some details about the most controversial issue at that moment int he society. For example, the sexual references, such as Rapunzel's innocently asking why her dress was getting tight around her belly, and thus naively revealing her pregnancy and the prince's visits to her step mother. So fairy tales are not always just about “happiness forever", they also show lots of the humanity morality and the shadow of society. Our likely costumers have reached the age to realize the true colour of the fairy tales. With their experience to live in this society, they no longer believe in the fairy tales which have been beautify. They believe that there won't be success and good ending without hard working. Also at the same time, they are very disappointed about the shadow of this society. That is the emotion that I am trying to present in my collection.

DESIGN CONCEPT: Use the contract between the shadow and light (good factors and bad factors) in the fairy tales to show the negative emotion of the successful ladies. In this way, I want to make the right side of the bra is different from the left side, also the front brief and back brief has different mood of design. The right side of bra and front brief stand for the surface of the fairy tales (the happy mood), then the left side and back brief stand for the deep meaning of the fairy tales (the shadow part). And the design lines, gathers and transparency fabric will be the main elements of the design.

FABRIC: Chiffon, soft net fabric, lace, light knit fabric.

COLOUR:
related to the colour palette of the whole group collection of "creature of reverie".

DETAILS: different look from ride side and left side, and different mood of front and back side; straps on different place from usual; design lines around the body. Use a little lace and light chiffon to create the happy mood in the right side of the bra and front side of the brief

inspiration...

I wanted to quickly put this image up i found (vogue italia). Thought it really worked with our 'Creature if Reverie' theme ideas - dreamlike/escapism concepts. The dappled light and soft shadowing contrasting the strong lines of the front of the dress... The collection focusing on such contrast between the gentle nature of the fabrics and the stong lines of design and construction...

from project report...

"...through the smoke filled theatre the spotlight frames a lonely figure. Each slow sensual movement of the silhouette followed with anticipation. The masculine clothes pulled tight against the hourglass form of Lady Libertine. As she sheds the layers, the light hits the soft curves of her velvety skin; like porcelain her striking black hair and crimson lips..."

...to create garments that embrace the desire a woman has to feel beautiful and confident everyday, provocative and seductive every night.

With a wish to feel empowered in their sexuality, sensuality and sophistication, Lady Libertine encourages and assures women this can be a reality not a fantasy...

Some thoughts...

I thought these images created such a beautiful mood and were in line with the concept we have for the brand itself as well as how we want to market our lingerie. The haze created by the sun filtering in through the window links back to the concept of our theme, " Creature of Reverie".

Our ideas for marketing and store layout have a similar concept to our overall theme including sunlight and natural, subtle, almost grungy photography to create a more relaxed and dreamlike interpretation of a luxury lingerie brand. We want our designs and our brand to have a point of difference, separating ourselves partially from our competitors and promoting our brand in a more individualised manner.

"Lady Libertine" is about customers having the ability to enter another world when they enter our stores or website. Purchasing and wearing the garments from our stores provides an escapism and almost an altered mindset where one can adopt the persona of lady libertine, whatever they interpret that to be...

individual theme description and silhouette ideas

Within the 'Creature of Reverie' theme for our Spring/Summer 09 collection, i have been developing my own 'sub-theme' based around the Misericordes ballet i have already discussed on the blog. Throughout the ballet the bodies create symmetry; they mimic each other and there is a repatition of movements. Arms and legs warp around each other, while contrasting with strong, angled lines and movements across the stage. I will use this focus on line; shape; symmetry; mimic; and repatition throughout the drop (3 stories) i design. The pas de deux (the section of choreography i have chosen to use from the ballet) has this raw emotion; it is an expression of love; passion; sensuality but with it there is a sense of sadness; of longing that comes with the an intense love. Misericordes is a modern ballet and so the choreography is very much about the movement; the dancers and their interaction/the shapes they create with their bodies. There are no sets/back-drops and the costumes, although have a traditional apperance, they are in very muted colours/tones - it creates this almost dream-like experience; as though you are viewing something undiscovered; something very personal. Considering all of these aspects, as well as the nature of the overall theme i have considered/researched word association to create a name:
- misericorde = graciousness - graceful - fluid - effortless - aesthetic - elegant - anodit
= has a dream-like mood - mesmerising - hypnotic - sommferious - sommolent (sleep-to cause sleep) - anodyne (soothing to the mind or feelings)
- mood of the piece = desire - passion - intensity - ardor - audity - warmth
= responsive - response - echo - influence - sway; impression
= physicallity - animalism (animality) - sensuality
I have come up with two possible names that i like: "Anodyne" OR "Echoes of Sonnolence"
I have begun to look at the points to consider when creating a collection to try to create some direction but also to show how it links into the 'Creature of Reveire' theme.
General: - line that follows/continues around the body
- mix/contrast of angled/diagonal line with shapes/lines that mimic the softness circular nature of wrapping of arms and legs around the body/head/shoulders.
- symmety/balance in line coming from the centre of the body and use of repatition of line.
Fabrics: - fabrications are going to depend a little bit on what everyone as a group decides and what is available; i will be able to specify the fabrics after our group fabric shopping trip on tuesday HOWEVER
- believe that because of the market positioning of the label and target market profile, fabrics should generall reflect high quality
- would like to have a mesh (elastine?) and a silk satin (matte and lustre)
Colour: - obviously relates to the 'Creature of Reverie' colour palette and the colour proportions
Details: - use of sheer and opaque fabrics to define line and reflect the feeling of exposure/openess/bareness of the mood and choreography - also links with the dream-like nature of the 'Creature of Reverie' theme + the sexuality associated with the label
- no lace but would like to use some kind of brade/elastic insert with in-lay detail
- gathering of fabric to mimic the wrapping - could be pintucks/tucks of fabric at seams (?) - would need to consider the bulk associated with doing this and therefore the fabrics used.
Above are images of the silhouettes of the dancers from the Misericordes Ballet performing positions choreographed into the piece. They demonstrate the wrapping of arms and legs around the body - the intertwining BUT also how angled line is contrasted with this smooth, circular shapes. The use of symmetry is also demonstrated in these images and although it is not visible without seeing the positions performed as a whole dance, these lines and movements are repeated throughout the pas de deux section of the ballet. Further more the images give some kind of an idea about the intimacy/sensual/passion of the choreography (although seeing the piece one really experiences the tension and passion created by the dancers and the movements.)
As you can see above, i have taken these silhouette positions and played around with the size, placing them on the body to create and reflect the lines that will be seen throughout the drop (3 stories) i will design for the 'Creature of Reverie' Spring/Summer09 Collection. (sorry the quality isnt great but i printed the images on tracing paper so the lines of intersection could be seen - but it didnt scan very well!)

insiprational images for lady Libertine store ideas

Above are some images i put together from old record covers, after our discussion about the mood and theme we would like to have in a Lady libertine store. As previously discussed i looked at the store design of other lingerie labels like Chantal Thomass and AP, who seem to focus heavily on the fairy-tale, boudior theme. Although we want to keep some of this because we all seem to agree this has a direct association with lingerie HOWEVER we would like to recognise the label's Australian roots and the story behind Lady Libertine.
We have therefore discussed and decided that the styling and design of a future lady libertine store would be set out like the backstage/dressing room of Lady libertine but instead of trying to recreate a glamorous, 'hollywood' style we would take a more realistic, nostalgic feel found in the 'real' theatre dressing rooms fo teh burlesque era. It would include soft tones and dappled light; old wood mixed with worn 20's/30's inspired velvets and jacquards; the front door designed to look like a dressing room door; furniture of the era (lay-couches and wooden chairs) with a pre-loved apperance; garments displayed (one of each size) on costume hanging racks; mirrors; bunches of flowers and photographs of LL; old sequined/beaded LL costumes hung around as though she has just got off stage; dressing rooms with heavy, stage-styled curtains while one wall possibly draped with a sheer fabric, back-lit by stage spots...
Hope this has discribed what we have discussed. Update or add to this if you feel like i have missed something...

There is a illustrator file for the logo in the blackboard, as I cannot put the illustrator file here. So you can get the file from the blackboard. ^^

I redraw the logo in the illustrator and smooth the line of it, so it can be filled with colour straight way in the illustrator.
